From everyone on the LayerOne team to our attendees and supporters, we would like to thank you for the support you have given us over the years. We regret to announce that we are postponing our 2010 show until 2011. We had hoped to try for a show this year, but it simply looks like that will not happen. Allow us to explain our logic for postponing this years show..

The Economy

The economy is still down in the dumps. As a result, attendance at conferences is down across the board baring a few notable exceptions. Since we are a small conference, this down economy has affected us greatly. In addition to reduced attendance, sponsor dollars have become harder to come by as well. Even companies that are doing well right now have had to curtail their philanthropy in order to remain profitable. While we aren’t interested in LayerOne ever becoming a multi-million dollar venture, we cannot afford to throw the event out of pocket either. Postponing this year’s event till 2011 simply makes good financial sense for us.

The Staff

It seems that 2010 is already shaping up to be the year the LayerOne staff gets back to dealing with their personal lives. Marriages, home purchases, job changes, new business opportunities, and cross country moves have all put a significant burden on our various personal lives. In short, we’re scattered across the country and are swamped dealing with our own lives.

The Venue

There were several locations that we were looking at for a LayerOne 2010 show; however none of them are available on the dates we want to throw the conference. With the sudden surge in security conferences over the last few years, it’s becoming difficult to plan around them so we don’t step on each other’s toes.

The Conclusion

We love putting LayerOne events on. LayerOne can be expensive, time consuming, and downright frustrating to pull off, but when it all comes together it is totally worth the effort. Because of our passion for LayerOne, we only want to throw a show if we know for a fact that we can pull off a top-notch, professional event. Doing things ‘half-assed’ is not in our nature and would be an insult to our attendees and supporters. Based off the above conditions, we simply do not think we could put together a show this year that would meet our high standards. We will not insult you with a hastily organized, poorly planned event.

So, with that said, we are already discussing what we are going to do for 2011. We want to change the format of the show as well as the type of venue we’ve been using. We are currently brimming with ideas that will take time to hash out, time we now have available to us. We hope that we can count on your continued support throughout 2010 and into 2011 (and beyond). Thank you!

So, you’ve probably seen that the videos have been ripped and put up on youtube. If not, well, the videos have been ripped and put on youtube.

However some of you may want to purchase a high quality DVD of a particular talk or an entire set. So, I would like to call out our dedicated A/V guy, Tedd. Tedd travels across the country covering these types of ‘fringe’ conferences. Tedd’s done everything from notable hacker conferences such as Toorcon and Shmoocon to things like Bigfoot conventions and UFO conventions. You can get copies of these talks, as well as many others over at his site Media Archives. I cant thank Tedd enough for what he’s done for our conference and for the community. So, if you want a high res copy of a talk, hit him up.

Got photos? Sure you do! Send us your links so we can post them.
If you use Flickr we’ve created a LayerOne Group that you can join so everyone can find your photos easier!

More to come…

You may now set your device updates for the L1 Twitter to ‘off’! We had a blast putting on the conference. With the exception of the WiFi SNAFU, everything seemed to go off without a hitch. Folks liked the new venue, folks like the no rush nature of a Sunday butting up against a holiday, and folks liked the speakers. Based on what we’ve seen so far, the attendees liked attending and the speakers liked speaking. I guess we’ll just have to do another one next year.

Now, lets say you didn’t enjoy L1 for some reason, or you thought it was OK but not as good as it could have been..
Hit us up on our contact link and tell us about it. We want feedback from our attendees, good or bad, so we can make changes to our event. Those that have attended in the past will notice that each year we change based on the feedback we receive from our attendees. The logic is simple really, we don’t do this for us, we do it for you. We’re not going to put on the show we want, we’re going to put on the show you want. So, have some feedback or input? Tell us!
